Latest Technological Developments Around The World

Technology forms an inseparable part of our lives. From personal life to the professional aspect, we have become dependent on technology to accomplish most of the tasks. Hence, it is essential to be aware of the news from the world of technology.

Technology is a field that sees rapid developments in short intervals. In most cases, the development or the discovery of a flaw or any other kind of news related to technology will directly or indirectly have some kind of impact on the common man’s life. So, here is some news related to technology.

Recent developments in technology

      • Researchers successfully connect a dead locust ear to a robot.

A lot of research has been going on concerning creating a connection between the biological and technological systems. Researchers from Tel Aviv University, Israel, have finally succeeded in doing so.

An interdisciplinary team from the university connected a dead locust ear to a robot and programmed a chip that can convert the input in the locust’s ear into input for the robot. It was successful research as the robot now responds to auditory input given at the dead locust’s ear.

The researchers claimed that the sense of hearing would be easier to work with, and thus it was chosen. It would be useful because biological systems consume lesser energy than technological systems. If the research further continues for other senses, it will become possible to create robots with sensitive biological noses. It will have many applications such as drug detection, identification of explosives, criminals, and so on.

      • The smart ‘tattoo.’

Smartphones, TVs, refrigerators and a range of appliances that we use today have become ‘smart.’ As an addition to this, scientists from University College London and the Italian Institute of Technology have developed a smart tattoo.

These tattoos are made using organic light-emitting diodes or OLEDs. What makes the tattoo smart is its ability to glow. In the field of sports, the smart tattoo can be integrated with sweat sensors such that it will light up when a sportsperson is dehydrated.

Other possible applications include using the tattoo to monitor a patient’s condition. When any change is detected, the tattoo will light up as an indicator. The best part about these tattoos is that they are temporary and can be washed away with soap and water.

      • An alternative for the swab test?

The swab-based test is widely used to test the presence of coronavirus in an individual’s body. Scientists from rice university have now developed a chip programmed with magnetic nanobeads. This solution may possibly replace the swab tests due to the benefits it offers.

The test results can be obtained within 55 minutes. An added advantage is the fact that one need not depend on a laboratory to get the results. The tool takes a standard finger prick and delivers results at the collection site itself. According to the scientists who carried out the research, it would be possible to build the new test kits at scale and even modify them to detect new COVID-19 strains if necessary.

      • Green computing for a better future

When one talks about carbon footprints, the common sources that people think of our vehicles, industries and such. However, many people fail to realize that computing devices too significantly contribute to carbon footprints.

The silicon chips inside the devices we use, the microprocessors, all come in the way of sustainable development. A US-based research team has recognized the need to build computing devices that contribute to a sustainable environment. Currently, manufacturers consider factors such as performance and battery life while building devices. The research team has mapped the life-cycle of the devices to identify the stages where emission occur the most.

The results of the study are expected to motivate people to move towards a world where environmental emissions also form a huge of manufacturing devices.

Keeping in touch with rapid developments

For many people, technology is the go-to place to find solutions for many types of issues. Today, interdisciplinary research teams have become more common. Let us consider the current situation itself – medical researchers joining hands with technology experts to build test kits for the coronavirus. Thus, irrespective of the field that one is in, it is always a good habit to keep in touch with the breakthroughs in technology.

Many websites are dedicated to the purpose of reporting news related to science and technology. The common man can make use of these channels to get credible news.
